Set up Course

A WriteLab Course allows you to manage assignments, view and respond to your students’ work, and watch your students’ progress unfold, all in one place.

  1. Open the My Courses menu and select + New Course.
  2. Create Course:
    • Title your Course.
    • Select start and end dates for your Course.
    • Select your institution from the drop-down menu.
    • Click CREATE to go to the next step.
  3. Invite Students (optional):
    • Copy and paste or type your students' email addresses. Email addresses can be separated by commas, spaces, or line breaks.
    • (Optional) Enter a message to accompany the Course invitation.
    • (Optional) Check the CC me on the invite emails box if you want receive a copy of the Course invitation email.
    • Click INVITE to go to the next step.
    • Tip: You can return to this step and invite students and instructors later.
  4. Create assignment (optional):
    • Title your assignment.
    • Add a prompt.
    • Select a due date and time for the assignment.
    • (Optional) Enter a message to accompany the assignment notification email.
    • (Optional) Check the "CC me on the invite email" box if you want receive a copy of the assignment notification email.
    • (Optional) Check the "Create and add another Assignment" box is you want to add another assignment right away.
    • Click CREATE to go to the next step.
  5. Confirm Course:
    • Don't want to create this Course after all? Select "delete this Course."
    • You can edit an existing assignment or add a new assignment.
    • You can also invite more students from this page.
    • Click VIEW COURSE to start using WriteLab.


EDIT COURSE:

You can rename your Course or adjust the start and end dates.

  1. Click on My Courses and click on the title of the course you want to edit.
  2. Click EDIT to open the Edit Course page.
  3. Enter a new name and/or start and end dates for the Course.
  4. Click UPDATE.
     

Create an Assignment

You can use assignments to manage the work students do for your Course. Students' assignments are automatically shared with you, and you can view the time-stamped revision history of students' work.

You can create assignments complete with prompts, specifications, and due dates.

  1. Click My Courses and select the Course for which you want to create an assignment.
  2. Click the + NEW ASSIGNMENT button.
  3. Title your assignment, and add a prompt, specifications, and due date.
  4. (Optional) Write a message to accompany the assignment.
  5. (Optional) Check the CC me on the emails box to receive a copy of the assignment notification email.
  6. Click CREATE. WriteLab will email the assignment to your students.

Edit Assignment

You can change the assignment’s prompt, specifications, or due date at any time. Students will receive a notification email when you change an assignment.

  1. Click My Courses and select the Course from the drop-down menu. You can also click on My Courses, select View All, then select the Course from the My Course page.
  2. Select Assignment from the View By drop-down menu to view the list of assignments for that Course.
  3. Click the name of the assignment you want to edit.
  4. Click the EDIT button to open the Edit Assignment page.
  5. After making changes, click SUBMIT. WriteLab will automatically email your students notifying them that you have updated the assignment.

Respond to Student Drafts

You can read and respond to student drafts directly in WriteLab.

View Student Drafts

As an instructor, you can view the work your students submit as assignments.

VIEW BY STUDENT PORTFOLIO

  1. Click on My Courses and select a course from the drop-down menu.
  2. Use the drop-down menu to view the course by student.
  3. Click on a student’s name to see a list of the work they have done for the course.
  4. Click a document title to view their most recent draft.

VIEW BY ASSIGNMENT

  1. Click on My Courses and select a course from the drop-down menu.
  2. Use the drop-down menu to view the course by assignment.
  3. Click on an assignment name to see the documents students have submitted for that assignment.
  4. Click a document title to view the most recent draft.

Leave a Note

  1. Highlight the text on which you would like to comment.
  2. Click Notes in the upper toolbar. The notes button is disabled until you highlight text.
  3. A comment box will open up on the left. Write your note, then click CREATE.


Edit a Note

  1. Click Notes in the Comments Panel.
  2. Find the note you wish to modify, click in the box, and start typing.
  3. When you have finished editing the note, click SAVE CHANGES.

View Analytics

Watch the story of your students' progress unfold with WriteLab's analytics. See which comments your students receive, how they interact with WriteLab's feedback, and create custom graphs outfitted with metrics of your choosing.

  1. Click on My Courses and select a course from the drop-down menu to open the course’s homepage.
  2. Click the ANALYTICS button to view analytics for that course.


Use Graph Filters

Use the analytics graph filters to analyze specific areas of your students' progress.

FILTER BY STUDENT

  1. Click on the STUDENT filter.
  2. Select a single student to create a graph that shows his or her individual progress.
  3. Select All Students to view all student progress.

FILTER BY ASSIGNMENT

  1. Click on the ASSIGNMENT filter.
  2. Select an individual assignment to create a graph that shows students' progress across their drafts for a particular assignment.
