Set up Courses

A WriteLab Course allows you to manage assignments, view and respond to your students’ work, and watch your students’ progress unfold, all in one place.

Create a Course

  1. Press + NEW COURSE.
  2. Enter the Course title and start and end dates, and select the appropriate Institution.
  3. Press CREATE.
  4. Enter your students' email addresses.
  5. Press INVITE. Your students will receive email notifications with links to join your Course on WriteLab.
  6. To create an assignment, enter the assignment title, prompt, and due date.
  7. Press CREATE.
  8. Confirm your Course information. You can edit information, invite more students, or create additional assignments from here.
  9. When you are finished, press VIEW COURSE.

  1. Press + NEW COURSE.
  2. Enter Course title, start and end dates, and select the appropriate Institution.
  3. Press CREATE.
  4. Follow the directions in the next two pages to invite your students and create assignments.
  5. On the final page, confirm your Course information. You can edit information, invite more students, or create additional assignments from here.
  6. When you are finished, press VIEW COURSE.

After you've created your course, you can still edit course information, invite additional students, and create assignments.

EDIT COURSE

You can rename your Course or adjust the start and end dates.

  1. Select the Course you want to update.
  2. Press EDIT.
  3. Make the desired changes, then press UPDATE.

Create Assignments [*IMPORTANT*]

Use assignments to manage the work students do for your Course.

To create an assignment:

  1. Go to the appropriate Course.
  2. Press + NEW ASSIGNMENT.
  3. Enter the assignment title, prompt, and due date.
  4. Press CREATE.

After you you create an assignment, WriteLab will send email notifications to your students with links to get started.

What to expect ....

Once students have started on their assignments, they will have to share their drafts [link?] with you to see them.

EDIT ASSIGNMENTS

You can change the assignment’s prompt, specifications, or due date at any time. Students will receive a notification email when you change an assignment.

  1. Go to the appropriate Course
  2. Select Assignment from the VIEW BY drop-down menu.
  3. Select the assignment you want to edit.
  4. Press EDIT.
  5. Make desired changes, then press SUBMIT.

WriteLab will email your students notifying them that you have updated the assignment.

Respond to Student Drafts

You can read and respond to student drafts directly in WriteLab.

View Student Drafts

As an instructor, you can view the work your students submit as assignments.

VIEW BY STUDENT

  1. Select Student from the VIEW BY drop-down menu.
  2. Select a student’s name to see a list of assignments they have done for the course.
  3. Select a document title to view their most recent draft.

VIEW BY ASSIGNMENT

  1. Select Assignment from the VIEW BY drop-down menu.
  2. Select an assignment name to see the documents students have submitted for that assignment.
  3. Select a document title to view the most recent draft.
     

Leave Notes

  1. Highlight the text on which you would like to comment.
  2. Press ADD A NOTE in the upper toolbar.
  3. A comment box will open up on the left. Write your note, then press CREATE.

Your students will be able to view the notes you make on their drafts. They will also receive an email notification telling them that you left a note.

EDIT NOTES

  1. Find the note you wish to modify and press EDIT.
  2. Type your changes in the text box, then press SAVE CHANGES.

View Analytics

Watch the story of your students' progress unfold with WriteLab's analytics. See which comments your students receive, how they interact with WriteLab's feedback, and create custom graphs outfitted with metrics of your choosing.

  1. Go to the appropriate Course.
  2. Press ANALYTICS.


Use Graph Filters

Use the analytics graph filters to analyze specific areas of your students' progress.

FILTER BY STUDENT

  1. Click on the STUDENT filter.
  2. Select a single student to create a graph that shows her individual progress.
  3. Select All Students to view all student progress.

FILTER BY ASSIGNMENT

  1. Click on the ASSIGNMENT filter.
  2. Select an individual assignment to create a graph that shows students' progress across their drafts for a particular assignment.
